LAKSMI - A DEUSA HINDU DA FORTUNA, BOA SORTE,FARTURA, ABUNDÂNCIA E PROSPERIDADE
Uma das divindades mais cultuadas pelos hindus (em especial os comerciantes), a palavra que dá nome à deusa é Laksya" do sânscrito: o "alvo", o "objetivo".
Consorte de Vishnu, o Deus Protetor e sustentador de todo o Universo (conforme mitologia hindu), Lakshmi é a representação máxima do aspecto feminino tendo como características marcantes sua juventude eterna e formosura.
Sua pele é dourada e em geral é retratada sentada ou em pé sobre uma flor de lótus.
Dia 16 de Novembro é o Festival hindu Diwalli dedicado à Lakshmi, representando tudo o que é benéfico, conhecida na Indonésia como Giriputri.
Diwalli significa guirlanda de luzes e durante os cinco dias desta festa popular na India e no Tibete, as rua são iluminadas e soltam-se fogos de artifício. As casas são limpas, decoradas com flores, pequenas lâmpadas (diye) e imagens da deusa. As famílias se visitam, trocam presentes e celebram com comidas típicas como o bolo de arroz (khil) e doces (patashe).
Nos templos, os altares são enfeitados com guirlandas de flores e desenhos tradicionais (rangoli). Pequenos barcos feitos de côco e velas são colocados nos rios e as crianças carregam tochas acesas.
Os brahmanes visitam as casas e deixam símbolos e moedas abençoados para atrair as qualidades da deusa. Trocam-se os livros de contas das lojas e novas imagens de Lakshmi para carregar nas bolsas são compradas.
Segue uma análise da simbologia da deusa por Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi (EUA - 2000):
